Design & Animation: Getting Started
Requirementsβ
- OBS Studio
- After Effects
- Bodymovin Plugin
Operating System:
- Windows
macOS is not currently supported
Initial Considerationsβ
Familiarize yourself with Lottie and Bodymovin for After Effects to create animations compatible with OBS.
Check Lottieβs supported features for compatibility, especially for masking and feathering options.
Read the Bodymovin Documentation For After Effects basics and installation.
Design & Animation Guidelinesβ
Simplify Your Workflowβ
Lottie works best with shape layers and no 3D elements. Use nulls and 2D tracking, as cameras and lights are not supported.
Manage Use of Textures and Image Sizesβ
Use cropped images and sequences where possible and minimize texture sizes as large image textures can cause memory issues.
Use Gradients Wiselyβ
Prefer the gradient effect in After Effects over image gradients to avoid performance issues.
Composition Layoutβ
Create your instant replay in three parts.
- Animation-In: Transitions from the stream to the replay.
- Loop: A seamless animation loop for the replay duration.
- Animation-Out: Transitions from the loop back to the stream.
Workflow Overviewβ
- Utilize shape layers with no 3D animations.
- Limit textures, limit image sequences and use small image sizes.
- Maintain clear naming conventions and organization with pre-comps.
